Douala is Cameroon’s commercial capital and the main business hub for the wider Central African region. Much of the country’s trade moves through the city, from oil and timber to cocoa and coffee. Many regional banking, logistics, energy, and trading firms are also based here. Business is largely centred around Bonanjo and Akwa, where offices, banks, and administrative buildings sit close to the port and key transport routes.

You’ll also notice reminders of Douala’s long-standing role as a trading city, from the Douala Courthouse to Kings Bell Palace (La Pagode). For business stays, Hotel Akwa Palace is a practical and well-located option, overlooking the Wouri River and close to the city’s main commercial districts, with meeting rooms and spaces to work or host discussions.

Douala’s cultural life is closely tied to the river, music, and long-standing traditions. The annual Ngondo Festival, held by the Sawa people along the Wouri River, is one of the city’s most important cultural events, bringing together ceremonies, music, and public gatherings. For contemporary art, spaces like the Doual’Art Contemporary Art Center offer a window into the city’s creative scene, while live music and performance venues reflect Cameroon’s wide range of musical styles.

Food is an easy way to experience the city. You’ll find everything from international restaurants to local kitchens serving dishes such as ndolé and poulet DG, with French influence sitting comfortably alongside more global menus.

Akwa is the city’s main area for dining and evenings out, with cafés, lounges, and rooftop spots that work just as well for informal meetings as they do for winding down later in the day. Shopping ranges from the busy atmosphere of Marché Congo and Marché Sandaga to smaller boutiques and specialist shops across the city.

If you plan to venture further afield, Douala also works well as a base for short trips. Pongo Monkey Island is a distinctive river-based conservation visit or for longer outings, places like the Ekom-Nkam Waterfalls and the Manengouba Mountains give you a sense of Cameroon’s wider landscape, making Douala a practical starting point for exploring the area.
